Some of the 16 Workshops at the Quaker Peace Roundtable April 6-8

Peace Teams, Quaker & Interfaith, with Val Liveoak and Sallie King. Val Liveoak has risked her life in El Salvador, Chiapas, and other places doing peace work; she is now focusing on Colombia. Sallie King, a distinguished scholar of Buddhist-Christian studies, has taken part in an interfaith peace team effort in, among other sites, Israel/Palestine. Let Our Classrooms Speak: An Exploration of Living Quaker Testimonies Through Teaching, with our own Cy DeVries. Don't forget our special low ($50) registration rate for high school and college age Friends! We're also seeking volunteers to help with some of the many logistical challenges the Roundtable will present. There's a signup sheet by the QPR display in the Social Room, or email us at; qpr@quaker.org. Complete schedule and registration information is available at the Roundtable's webpage: www.quaker.org/qpr - or ask a committee member: Lynne Heritage, Dorothy Habecker, Chuck Fager, Rebecca Miles, or Reed and Marjorie Smith.

Right Sharing of World Resources Simple Potluck April 1

Annually, about this time of the year, our Meeting has a simple potluck meal to support the Right Sharing of the World Resources program of Friends. As reported in our Meeting Newsletter for March, this year a special luncheon - replacing the regular potluck - will be held following meeting for worship for business and meeting for worship on April 1. This occasion provides an opportunity for us to be more mindful of the discrepancy between our materialism and the poverty of so many persons in this world we share. By bringing a simple but adequate amount of food to share with others at the April 1 luncheon, we are freed to bring a monetary contribution, smaller or larger as we are able and wish. All contributions will be sent by our Meeting to the Right Sharing of World Resources program. Contribute in cash, or by check made payable to the State College Friends Meeting. If you cannot be present, please give your contribution to our Meeting Treasurers, Paul and Darlene Clark. Take a look at the poster display in the social room which tells more about the 13 grants to continuing projects, totalling $49,840, and the grants to 12 new projects, totalling $49,275, which are being made this year by RSWR. Most of the projects being helped are small ones in rural India. For more infomation contact Lu Evans, LuEvans@compuserve.com

Parents - Go Directly To Bulletin Board, Do Not Pass Refreshments

At the end of every First Day, the teachers of RE will post a brief description of what they did in class on the RE bulletin board. (The RE bulletin board is the board on the wall adjoining the meeting room, above the food bank box.) Now you will be able to ask your children more focused questions, like, "So what did you think about the story of Lucretia Mott?" rather than the general "what did you do in FDS today?" - which we have found is universally answered with, "Nothing!" So, please take a look and help improve our communication with you. Last week, the classes met jointly for a brief meeting for worship and to view The Lorax. This begins our segment on God Around Us, which will continue until the end of this school year.

Legislative Action Day in Harrisburg

The Pennsylvania Moratorium Commitee is holding a legislative action day - beginning with a press conference at the Main Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg on Tuesday, March 27 at 10 am. Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking, will speak, along with William Nieves, formerly on death row in PA, and others. Lobbying will be from 11:00-1:00 pm, followed by a rally. Zeb Bartel, president of Pax Christi at Penn State, is organizing transportation (return the same day.). If you can go, contact him at zrb@psu.edu or, contact Terry Rumsey of the PA Abolitionists, at (610)891-6614, e-mail: Greenseed2@aol.com. For more information contact Reed Smith, 867-5719 or reedmsmith@aol.com.

Firearm Violence - A Public Health Threat

The local Million Mom Movement is sponsoring a presentation on Wednesday, March 21, 7:30 pm, at the Friends School, by Dr. Allison Moll, representing Physicians for Social Responsibility. Dr. Moll will present facts and information based on research for her recent book about preventing childhood violence. More information, as well as flyers and posters to share with friends and professional associates, is available in the social room or by calling Julia Hix 466-2267.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Session

On Saturday, March 24 there will be a one day Session of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, held at 4th and Arch Street Meetinghouse. This is part of this year's PYM Annual Session; the other part is a residential yearly meeting session this summer. The program looks exciting, and will be followed in the evening by a talk by John Punshon, a well-known Quaker author. Child care will be available. Please register by March 16.

March Food Bank Needs

For March the State College Area Food Bank needs: canned fruits (especially Lite varieties), dried pasta or rice, chili or canned pasta, canned meats (chicken, turkey or ham), vegetable oil, and dry milk. Doubled paper grocery bags also are needed. Currently they do not need soups, canned tomatoes or beans. Monetary donations are welcome and can be sent to:

Food Bank, PO Box 907, State College, PA 16804.

The Quaker sense of God's immediate presence is the groundwork for a consciousness of human unity. Believing that all people partake in some measure of divine indwelling, the Friends are able to believe that where goodness is, there is God. - Mary K. Blackmar
