The Light

by John Carawan

I walked down the road one morning
The clouds hung heavy with rain;
The way had been long and lonely;
No sunlight’s colored stain
Tipped the mist on the treetops
Or lighted the rutted road.
I was heartsick, hopeless and weary;
I was bearing too heavy a load.

Then lifting my eyes,
I saw it;
The Light on the hills ahead;
It was like a drink to the thirsty;
It was like the taste of fresh bread;
It beckoned me on and upward,
Out of the shrouded night,
And my heart that was heavy, lifted,
For there it was:
The Light!
The Light!
