Take a look inside your heart my friend,
And see just what you find.
Is the person in there mean,
Or is the person in there kind?
Do you laugh at others
When they feel pain or fear?
Or do you feel sorrow and regret,
And want to draw them near?
When people talk about you,
Are you a friend, a good man
Or someone to avoid
As quickly as you can?
Do little children run to you
And try to hold your hand,
Or do they hide behind their Moms,
“Is that the Boogie Man?”
They say a man’s friends
Are a measure of his wealth,
For the love of a man’s friends
Is more valuable than health.
But the truest measure of a man
Is an easy thing to judge,
He’s strong when he knows he has to be
From his morals he won’t budge.
He stands to fight the good fight,
Against odds he cannot guess;
No matter how many times he falls,
He gets up and gives his best.
He’s quick to laugh, slow to upset,
And slower to raise his voice;
When thoughts come down to right or wrong,
There really is no choice.
He’s kind, he’s helpful,
And his thoughts are pure and clean,
And the idea of doing something evil
Is beyond his wildest dreams.
Now ask yourself, my friend,
Just where in all this do you stand;
If you measured yourself against these thoughts
Would you still come out a man?
