Friends and Scouting
Interchange - Winter 2009
Friends who have children participating in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or Camp Fire may not know that there are awards the Young Friends can earn as recognition of their knowledge of our Quaker faith. The award program is administered by the Friends Committee on Scouting (FCS) of the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC).
The “That of God” award can be earned by first hrough fifth graders in one to three months. The ”Spirit of Truth” award for sixth through twelfth graders is earned over the course of a year. The requirements
and workbooks for both awards are available
at the FCS website, www.scouting.quaker.org. The workbooks for these awards also make a good springboard curriculum for any First Day School class studying Quakerism.
The awards and recognition for earning them are typically given by the scout’s Monthly Meeting and recorded in the Meeting’s minutes. For more information,
contact Tim Mullady, Annapolis at (410) 798-9824 or Jim Lehman, Sandy Spring at (301) 774-7561. Tim and Jim are both members of FCS.

The Scout programs (both boy and girl) and the Campfire USA program
encourage their young members in their religious faiths by offering
awards appropriate to the specific faith. Each religion has their
own requirements for their award. For Quakers, the Friends World
Committee for Consultation sponsors the Friends and Scouting Committee,
which set the requirements for the Friends awards. The "That
of God" award is for Scouts fifth-grade-and-younger. The "Spirit
of Truth" award is for sixth-graders and older.
The study and work necessary to earn these awards brings the young
Friend to a greater understanding of Quaker history and beliefs.
If you have a young Cub or Boy Scout, Brownie, Cadette or Campfire
Kid, please call Jim Lehman, a Cubmaster, former Eagle Scout and
member of Sandy Spring: (301) 774-7561.
