PEACE-MAKING DAY
(UPDATE – February 2006)
CO-SPONSORS: Stony Run Friends Meeting
and Friends School of Baltimore
WHERE: Joint Friends School and Stony Run
Meeting Campus
5116 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21210
WHAT IS IT?
- A day
to learn that peace is possible; that war prevention works; and that we as
a world community can learn to not sow the seeds of deadly
conflict.
- A day
for educators (teachers, administrators, guidance counselors) to network
and learn about peace curriculums and how to integrate them into their
classrooms and schools.
We are aware
that children who learn in their schools to value themselves, and from
there to respectfully value and
interact with their peers, will move our world toward peaceful communities and
away from resolving differences with violence.
- A day
where individuals can come to understand how peace can be created in their
lives – as an individual, as a
classroom, as a society, as a world community – and how they can make a
difference.
- Spiritually,
we are mindful of Baltimore Yearly Meeting’s Faith and Practice: “God’s law of love, as taught and
lived by Jesus Christ, applies to all the levels of society. Wars break the law of love as do
violence in communities and families and fighting between
individuals. Friends have a
settled intention to practice love and to make peace.”
AUDIENCE:
·
We hope to educate people who will, in
their turn, affect a broad range of the public. To that end we are developing tracks for teachers, administrators
and guidance counselors of the public and private and parochial schools as well
as home schoolers, day care providers and youth group leaders.
·
Understanding that peace begins within
oneself, we will have a track for individual growth.
·
We are working on a track for Peace and
Religious Education.
- We are
working on a track around peace and justice issues – e.g. the importance
of sustainable incomes and
respect for world resources for world peace.
