Harford Friends School announced its intention to open a Friends
school in Harford County in September 2005. Harford Friends School
will begin as a middle school that is co-ed, small, independent,
affordable and diverse with a rich program of academic and experimental
learning. Harford Friends intends to eventually extend the program
to include an upper school, preparing students for higher education
and life-long learning.
“Harford Friends School will bring to the community a unique educational
program promoting academic excellence by developing the intellectual,
spiritual, moral, physical and aesthetic aspects of each individual’s
personal growth,” said Mary Ellen Saterlie (Little Falls Meeting).
Mary Ellen Saterlie, the former Associate Superintendent for Baltimore
County Public Schools, is Head of School Planning for Harford Friends.
The School will be characterized by the Quaker belief of “that
of God in everyone” manifesting itself through the principles of
truth, peaceful resolution of conflict, simplicity, respect and
community. The goal is to find and develop the good in every child,
so that each one may find the path to becoming a person who strengthens
self, the community and the world.
