Dear Lauri Perman and Howard
Fullerton,
New York Yearly Meeting
extends its deepest sympathy upon the death of your beloved Friend and member,
Tom Fox. We grieve with you the painful
outcome of this ordeal. In the past
months, we have felt a deep communion with you as we held vigils, sent letters
to Tom’s captors and carried Tom and his Christian Peacemaker Teams colleagues
in our hearts and prayers.
Following the events of
September 11th, the loving concern of so many Friends sustained us
in our anguish. Just as you were with
us then, we want you to know that we are with you now. We grieve with you, and also celebrate the
faith and commitment Tom embodied.
Tom’s single-minded desire
and commitment to live out the gospel message has been, and will continue to
be, both inspiring and deeply challenging to us. We know that such radical faithfulness is not for the faint of
heart. And we believe that Friends are
called to live out just this kind of radical witness. We join with Langley Hill Friends in their commitment to “honor
Tom’s courage by ensuring that the work to which he was dedicated
continues…” In this way Tom’s Light
shines on.
Friends, we will continue to
hold Tom’s family, Langley Hill Friends and Friends throughout the BaltimoreYearly Meeting in our hearts and
prayers in the weeks ahead.
In the Fellowship of Peace,
Linda B. Chidsey
Clerk, NYYM
Christopher Sammond
General Secretary, NYYM
