A Memorial Minute for Stanley Roger Koontz
Kindness is the word that comes to mind when we think of Roger, who passed away at the age of 85 on Dec. 21, 2005. Roger’s respect toward all people was a hallmark that remained consistent throughout his life. His great love of poetry was the conduit in which he shared his innermost feelings and his deep faith.
Always the teacher, Roger transmitted his faith through his spoken word and, most importantly, through his actions. As Chairman of the Frederick County, VA Board of Supervisors for many years, Roger guided many a crisis with a quiet calm, presenting a role model for all who served with him. He was devoted to Mary Lou, his wife of 54 years, and together they raised their two daughters on a family farm.
Prior to his marriage, he served in the military during World War II, which had a profound impact on the development of his faith. His book, Take the High Ground, published several years prior to his death, acutely describes his wartime experience and the spiritual journey toward his convincement as a Friend.
Roger and Mary Lou were “the glue” of Centre Meeting in Winchester, Virginia. Roger’s service as clerk of Centre Meeting for almost 30 years reflected his faith and love for his community, thus enriching the spiritual life of the meeting. The members of Hopewell Centre Meeting have lost a beloved and long-standing Friend . . . but remember fondly, that a life as well lived as Roger’s sustains us all.
