FMW Administrative Secretary

The Friends Meeting of Washington, D.C. of the Religious Society of Friends is seeking to employ an Administrative Secretary

The Administrative Secretary should be a member of the Religious Society of Friends with substantial experience in one or more Monthly Meetings, and an understanding of Quaker practice and procedure, including the manner of conducting business and the relationship of a Monthly Meeting to the wide range of Friends' organizations. The quality of the FMW Meeting community will be of major interest. The diversity of the Meeting will be respected: social, racial, and sexual orientation are accepted individual differences. The responsibilities of the position require the following qualities and abilities:
- leadership to guide, direct and train;
- providing a warm and stable presence for listening and giving advice on sources of assistance;
- practical knowledge and ability to learn how the buildings operate and are maintained;
- serving as an effective coordinator, facilitator and communicator;
- a sense of order and fiscal prudence;
- ability to handle emergencies and other disruptions to the Meeting community; and
- attention to best practices and future planning.
The Administrative Secretary:
- Manages buildings and grounds
- Manages tenants, responding in case of emergencies
- Oversees the use of property, including scheduling programs and activities
- Maintains with an Assistant Secretary regular office hours
- Manages the Assistant Secretary and any other employees
- Encourages and manages volunteers
- Provides staff support for the business of the Meeting
- With the help of committee clerks, maintains Meeting files
- Keeps a database of members and attenders, updating an annual directory
- Assembles a monthly newsletter and oversees its publication and distribution
- Maintains contact for the Meeting with other Quaker organizations
- Maintains a friendly Quaker presence in the Meeting House
