Produce Department
This is an inter-generational activity that is organized
and facilitated by Young Friends. On Wednesday and Thursday
at 9:15 p.m. Friends gather under the care of YF’s
to find out their true vegetable or fruit inner self. YF’s
lead their fruity vegetable groups in discussions centered
around queries or to play very intellectually stimulating
games such as “Two Truths and a Lie!” If you have
missed out on this opportunity to obtain a deeper understanding
of your inner watermelon or kumquat, please
join YF’s. Returning fruits are welcome!

Friday Carey Memorial Lecture: Clinton Pettus
W. Clinton Pettus came out of retirement in June 2005 to begin service with the American Friends service Committee (AFSC) as regional director of the Middle Atlantic Region. Prior to retirement he spent more than thirty years as a faculty member and college administrator.
When Clinton retired as a higher education administrator, he became interested in ways to manage and resolve conflict and was a certified trainer of managing conflict in the work place. It was while he was doing work on managing conflict that he became interested in the work of the AFSC.
Clinton's involvement in community activities includes his service on the Pendle Hill General Board and the Board of Trustees of the Wilmington Friends School. He is married to Kathryn Anne Isabelle Lancaster, and they have three daughters. Clinton and Kathryn reside in Pikesville, Maryland and are members of Wilmington Monthly Meeting in Delaware.
During his Carey Lecture, Clinton will draw upon his personal and professional experiences to discuss trying what love will do in a world that often seems to be dominated by fear, hatred, competitiveness and devotion to self.
Movie Night
Thursday evening enjoy a presentation of the classic science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still, presented by the American Friends Service Committee. This film (70 minutes, B & W) received the Golden Globe Award for "Best Film Promoting International Understanding" in 1951. Filmed partly in Washington, DC, the film still remains relevant today to many of the issues that AFSC and the Society of Friends struggle with, such as issues of the alien in American society, the relationship of the individual to the state, power, and meaning of power, gender issues, and taking ethical and moral stands that are opposed by the machinery of the state. Refreshments served. Discussion following the film for those interested. The film is rated G, and is appropriate for all ages.
